Sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is an oily lubricant. If sebum is manufactured faster than it can move through the pores, then a blemish forms. Excessive sebum causes the pores to become sticky which in turn attracts bacteria which get trapped inside the pore. When sebum combines with skin pigments, a blackhead forms, if sebum fills up the scales below the surface a whitehead forms.
